On Saturday, October 13, 2007, the Lansdowne Rugby Club lost to the Bayonne Bombers by a score of 16-3.
The match, held at Bayonne's home pitch on the water, was a windblown forward-dominated affair with only one try being scored.
The first 13 minutes were characterized by Bayonne being camped out in Lansdowne's half of the pitch. However, staunch defense
by the visitors kept Bayonne at bay until the 14th minute when a Lansdowne infringement led to a successful penalty by the
homeside, giving them a 3-0 lead.
The next 15 minutes saw a topsy-turvy contest as each team took turns pounding
away at each other without gaining any significant ground. However, in the 31st minute, Lansdowne didn't release the ball,
giving the homeside another shot at goal. The successful penalty lenghtened the Bombers' lead to 6-0. Lansdowne responded
furiously, and were led by center Damien Edmonson, whose thunderous runs brought Lansdowne inside the Bombers' 22. The first
half ended with an unsuccessful penalty kick at goal by the visitors.
The first 22 minutes of the second half saw each side mounting
attacks of which neither could take advantage. However, a lovely Bayonne grubber at midfield went along the touchline
and was scooped up by their outside center, who promptly galloped 40 meters downfield into the in-goal. The converted try
gave the Bombers a 13-0 lead. In the 34th minute, an imposing run by the Bombers' massive second row saw the homeside cross
Lansdowne's 22 meter line. An infringement at the ruck gave Bayonne another shot at goal, which was promptly converted
by their fullback.
The 16-0 deficit seemed to galvanize the visitors as they attacked furiously,
pushing the ball to the Bayonne 22. A Bombers' infringement led to Cork's own Johnny Coughlin taking a shot at goal which
he promptly slotted. The final 5 minutes saw Lansdowne on the attack, but were unable to put points on the board , ending
the contest at 16-3. Man of the Match was prop Luis Berroteran. Notable performances were by center Damien Edmonson,
fullback Mike Doolan, center Gavin Butler, wing Jack Dooley and scrumhalf Johnny Coughlin.
In an entertaining "B" match, the
mixed youthful and aged Lansdowne side was beaten by the Bombers 17-0. The match was characterized by exhuberance on
both sides. Notables on the visiting team were Rampaging Steve Murphy, scrumhalf Austin Purcell, flanker John Farrell and
winger Shane Langan.
On Saturday, October 6, 2007, a game Lansdowne Rugby Club was narrowly defeated by a strong Morris side
in Van Cortlandt Park. The loss, by the score of 21-17, dropped Lansdowne's record to 2-2-1. The game began slowly as the
first 8 minutes were characterized by some lax defense on both sides. In the 10th minute, Morris broke through and opened
the scoring with a well-deserved try. The score was converted, giving the New Jersey men a 7-0 advantage.
Lansdowne responded shortly thereafter as Cork's own Johnny Coughlin putĀ the home sideĀ on board with a successful
penalty kick. The following 20 minutes were characterized by Lansdowne dominance, particularly in the pack, and demonstrated
most clearly by a Brendan Garrone try off of a 20 meter driving maul. The lead was further extended by Delf King, who received
his try-scoring pass from Johnny Coughlin's skillfully retrieved Garryowen. The conversion made the numbers 17-7 to the home
side. However, Morris managed to exert some pressure prior to the conclusion of the half, and this effort was rewarded with
two converted penalties. The halftime score was 17-13 to Lansdowne. Lansdowne lost the services
of three players as Gavin Butler, Brian Galligan and Delf King were injured. Consequently, that led to Lansdowne spending
large stretches of the remainder of the match on the back foot. Despite rigorous goal-line defense and some try-saving tackles
from Vili Vakasikivala and Mike Doolan, Lansdowne were unable to prevent Morris from scoring the winning try with 5 minutes
left on the clock. Morris closed the scoringĀ at 21-17 with a converted penalty at the final whistle. Man of the Match
was scrumhalf Johnny Coughlan. Special mention goes to flanker Delf King, hooker Brendan Garrone, prop Vili Vakasikivala and
fullback Mike Doolan.
In the "B" game, Lansdowne lost by a score of 17-0 despite a strong showing in the second half
where they kept their opponents scoreless. Notable performers in this game were Matt Collins and newcomer Ross Connolly.
LANSDOWNE GET FIRST VICTORY OF SEASON by Richie Price
On Saturday, September 22, 2007, the Lansdowne RFC of NY hammered Princeton
Rugby by the convincing score of 32-17. The victory was the first of the season for Lansdowne and evened their record at
1-1-1.
Early dominance by the Lansdowne pack, particularly in the scrum, set
the foundation for the rest of the game. The first score was registered in the opening minutes with outhalf Jack Dooley crossing
the line following some good work from center Brian Galligan. Scrumhalf Johnny Coughlin converted the try, giving the
homeside a 7-0 advantage. Handling conditions proved to be a challenge due to a prematch
downpour, although Lansdowne generally employed a more effective kicking and counter-attacking game than their opponents.
As the half progressed, the Lansdowne pack continued to impress in the loose and at set pieces. The teams exchanged successful
penalty kicks before fullback Mike Doolan touched down under the posts following some excellent work by center Damien Edmonson.
The try was converted by Corkman Johnny Coughlin, giving the Irishmen a 17-3 lead.
Just before halftime, the lead was stretched even further
by a Delf King try following a long distance break from Gavin Butler. The Coughlin conversion upped the ante to 24-3. Although
Princeton responded with 2 tries in the latter stages of the game, an early second half penalty by Johnny Coughlin, and a
try from newcomer John Farrell had effectively put the game beyond the visitors' reach.
Man of the Match was Delf King. Special mention goes to Gavin
Butler, Johnny Coughlin, John Farrell, Damien Edmonson, Mike Doolan, Jack Dooley and the powerhouse front row of Luis Berroteran,
Brendan Garrone and Ian O'Connor.
In an entertaining "B" game, Lansdowne prevailed by
a score of 6-5. The match featured a few veterans including Eoin McCarthy and rampaging Steve Murphy, along with an impressive
contingent of new players from Manhattan College.
Lansdowne slumped to a last minute defeat versus the Village Lions in a closely contested encounter
on Randalls Island on Saturday. Having absorbed some early pressure with fine defensive work from Delf King and Brian
Finglelon in particular, Lansdowne opened the scoring with a penalty from Johnny Coughlan after 20 minutes. The village
Lions later responded with a penalty of their own, and the first half finished tied 3 points each. The second half
continued to see the Lansdowne pack maintain the upper hand in the scrum; however, the Lions continued to contest
the line out aggressively disrupting Lansdowne pocession on numerous occasions. As the half progressed, the lions
took the lead through a straight forward penalty. Some effective driving by the Lansdowne pack and and notable individual
breaks from Manus O'Sullivan and Damien failed to yield a try. With minutes left of the clock, Johnny Coughlan slotted
over a penalty from close range. It looked like the game would conclude in a tie; however, the Lansdowne defense was
unable to repel a late surge from the Lions and conceded the deciding try. In an entertaining B game, Lansdowne
prevailed by a score of 10 to 3. The game featured a few veterans including Eoin McCarthy and rampaging Steve Murphy,
along with an impressive contingent of new players from Manhattan College. An early Village Lions lead was eclipsed by
a penalty from returning player Anthony O'Brien. The contest was sealed by try from Boston Pete following some
excellent driving in the pack
Lansdowne Ties in Division 2 Return by Richie Price. On Saturday, September 8, 2007, the Lansdowne Rugby
Club of New York and the Rockaway Fisheads battered each other in 90 degree heat to a 21 all draw. The occasion marked Lansdowne's
latest foray into Division 2 after being promoted last year. The match was an extremely sloppy affair as it was evident that
both sides were affected by the severe temperatures. The first 5 minutes saw Lansdowne on the attack while penetrating deep
into Rockaway territory. However, the Fishead's defense proved quite resilient as they prevented Lansdowne from
scoring and then began their own counterattack. In the 12th minute, it appeared as though Rockaway's strong side winger was
going to score, but Lansdowne's veteran prop Vili Vakasikivala made a try saving tackle and and stripped the Fishead of
the ball just at the mouth of the in-goal. However, 3 minutes later, due to some strong forward play
and impressive open field running of their fullback, Rockaway took a 3-0 lead on a converted penalty caused by a Lansdowne
infringement. The nip and tuck affair took another turn as Lansdowne pushed the ball deep into Fishead territory. A ruck was
formed 10 meters out and the ball came out wide to flyhalf Jack Dooley. Dubliner Dooley whipped the ball out wide to newcomer
Damien Edmonson who promptly touched down at the 20 minute mark. The unconverted try gave the Irishmen a 5-3 advantage.
However Rockaway were resolute and began another counterattack. An infringement at a midfield ruck gave the Fishead fullback
another shot at goal which he promptly converted in the 23rd minute. The long distance kick made the score 6-5 to the
visitors. The next 10 minutes saw the action go back and forth until Lansdowne stole the ball at midfield. Some excellent
work in the rucks from Manus O'Sullivan and Delf King allowed Lansdowne to attack inside the Rockaway 22 meter line. Hooker
Junior Blaber got ball in hand and slammed down in the corner of the in-goal in the 31st minute. Scrumhalf Johnny Coghlan
converted the try giving Lansdowne a 12-6 advantage. Lansdowne weren't finished yet, and 6 minutes later, Corkman Coghlan
slotted a penalty after a Rockaway infringement at a ruck, giving the homeside a 15-6 advantage. Just 3 minutes later,
Rockaway were on the attack, penetrating deep into Lansdowne territory. But the Lansdowne defense held firm, causing a turnover.
Johnny Coghlan promptly launched a kick into touch, thereby ending the half. The second stanza began in an uneventful
manner until the 9th minute when a Fishead player did not release the ball on the ground. Johnny Coughlin successfully
kicked the ensuing penalty giving Lansdowne an 18-6 advantage. Seven minutes later, a Rockaway Garryowen was launched in the
direction of winger Dave Pfaehler at the Lansdowne 22. Pfeahler promptly offloaded to player/coach Gavin Butler, who flew
down along the tryline 60 meters approaching the in-goal. Only due to a fantastic tackle was a try averted. The play
seemed to galvanize the Rockaway side as they began an impressive counterattack. Due to some imposing forward play and creative
ball distribution of scrumhalf Bob Johnson, the Fisheads penetrated deep into Lansdowne territory. A 10 meter rolling
maul led to an unconverted Rockaway try, making the score 18-11. Only 5 minutes later, Rockaway were on the offensive again,
as their fullback found space and went 70 meters downfield, appearing certain to score. However, Lansdowne fullback Matt Collins
made the play of the game by chasing the Fishead down and and tackling him in front of the in-goal. Rockaway seemed unflustered
and went on the attack once again. In the 31st minute, the Fishead fullback kicked a successful penalty lowering the Lansdowne
advantage 18-14. For the next 6 minutes, the imposing Rockaway forwards maintained possession through some fierce physical
play and were able to push the ball into the Lansdowne in-goal. The converted try gave the visitors a 21-18 advantage in the
37th minute. But Lansdowne weren't quite finished yet and were able to retrieve the ball at midfield. Rockaway subsequently
infringed giving Lansdowne a shot at goal. On the final play of the game, Johnny Coughlin came to the rescue and calmly slotted
a massively clutch penalty from midfield which finalized the score at 21 all. Co-Men of the Match goes to Johnny Coughlin
and Brian (Bernard) Galligan who were all over the pitch and made some thunderous tackles. Special mention goes to Gavin Butler,
Damien Edmonson, Matt Collins, Junior Blaber, Manus O'Sullivan and Delf King. Fall Lansdowne practices are held at Tibbetts

LANSDOWNE ARE CHAMPIONS!!!!!! by Richie Price. On Saturday, November 11, the Lansdowne Rugby Club of NYC won the METNY Division 3 title by vanquishing a weakened NY Americans side to the tune of 48
7. Despite having identical records of 7 wins and 1 loss, Lansdowne overcomes Danbury due to the primary tie
breaking method of head to head competition. The Irish side started the match by by imposing their will on the undermanned Americans. The first 8 minutes saw Lansdowne push the visitors back towards their own goal by mixing up the attack between forward and back links. Delf (the try
scoring) King broke the ice by securing a loose ball off of the base of a ruck and hammering past 2 defenders into the in
goal. Johnny Coghlan's 9th minute conversion gave the Bhoys a 7-0
lead. Lansdowne upped their numbers in the 12th minute when newcomer Liam O'Connell gained possession and galloped 30 meters into the ingoal. A Coghlan conversion increased the lead to 140. However, the Americans came back to life and drove down to the Lansdowne 22. Multiple phases opened up some space, and a gap was created which was exploited by the Americans' outhalf, who touched down under the posts. The successful conversion in the 23rd minute lessened the lead to 14-7. The visitors' try was a wake-up call for the Irishmen, and they responded in a positive manner. Multiple phases and some creative running/passing by the backline led to a possession for center Johnny Coghlan. Corkman Coghlan touched down in the in-goal increasing the lead to 19-7. The homeside wasn't finished yet, as player/coach Gavin Butler thundered through the Americans' defense and offloaded to prop Vili Vakasikivala. Vili demonstrated some nifty moves and slammed home increasing the to 24-7 at the break. The second half began as the first ended as the Irishmen simply imposed their will on the visitors by dominating possession and territory. In the 8th minute, Johnny Coghlan sent a chip kick towards the line which was run down by outhalf Jack Dooley. Dubliner Dooley glided into the in-goal, and the try was converted by Johnny Coughlin. The 31-7 lead became larger only moments later as James Stones got ball in hand from 15 meters out and turned the corner while beating 3 defenders. Westmeathman Stones' try in the 16th minute gave Lansdowne a 36-7 lead. The Irishmen weren't finished scoring and kept tremendous pressure on the visitors' defense. The 25th minute saw flanker Delf King grab a quick tap penalty and carry 2 defenders into the try zone. Manus O'Sullivan converted with a drop kick, upping the numbers to 43-7. The final posting of points was yet another try by the ever-impressive Delf King, who peeled off of a maul and slammed home in injury time. The final score was 48-7. Co-Men of the Match were back row partners Delf King and Manus O'Sullivan. They, along with flanker Brian Fingleton, comprise one of the best back rows in recent memory. Specil mention goes to Johnny Coghlan, Jack Dooley, Gavin Butler, Liam O'Connell, Mike Doolan and the relentless Vili Vakasikivala. LANSDOWNE EXPRESS RIGHT BACK ON TRACK by Richie Price. On Saturday, November 4, the Lansdowne Rugby Club of NYC overcame an enormous roadblock towards the League Championship by overpowering the previously unbeaten Danbury RFC to the tune of 29-14. The only remaining obstacle is the New York Americans, who will be challenging the Irish side on November 11 in Van Cortlandt Park. The match began furiously, as the favored Danbury Club came out looking to score early and often by keeping the home team back on their heels. The visitors pressured Lansdowne by utilizing multiple phases and the crisp tactical kicking of their outhalf. Their efforts paid off in the 7th minute, as a Lansdowne penalty gave Danbury a shot at goal. The flyhalf split the posts which opened the scoring at 3-0. Danbury kept the pressure going due to some fine work by their big, mobile forwards. The visitors sent a kick inside the Lansdowne 22, which was relentlessly run down by the Danbury backline. Lansdowne didn't release the ball in the tackle, so another penalty was awarded to the Conneticut side. Their outhalf converted in the 11th minute, making the score 6-0. Danbury continued their furious pace by mixing up their attack between the forwards and backs. A Danbury kick to the Lansdowne 22 was gobbled up by Irishside flanker Delf King. Delf was tackled, but immediately got up to begin a counterattack, when a highly dubious referee's whistle claimed that King didn't release the ball. The Danbury outhalf slotted in the 15th minute, lengthening their lead to 9-0. However, Lansdowne's confidence never wavered, and the Irish side began to assert themselves. Multiple Lansdowne phases led to penetration deep into Danbury territory. The visitors were whistled inside their own 22. Prop Vili Bakasikivala demanded the ball, and on the ensuing quick tap penalty, hammered his way past 3 would-be tacklers, and dove into the in-goal. A Johnny Coghlan conversion 9-7 in the in the 24th minute. Lansdowne seemed emboldened by the score, and on the ensuing kick-off, the ball landed into the highly competent hands of outhalf Jack Dooley. From midfield, Dubliner Dooley launched a clever chip kick which bounded past Danbury's winger and fullback. Lansdowne winger Matt ran the ball down and glided into the in-goal scoring what has to be the try of the year. The touch-down and subsequent conversion by Corkman Johnny Coghlan gave Lansdowne the lead for the first time in the 27th minute. For the next 13 minutes, Lansdowne was relentless in attack, almost scoring on 2 separate occasions. However, some fine defensive work by Danbury prevented any more numbers. The second half began with the Danbury flyhalf being sin-binned for punching. Lansdowne took full advantage by mixing up their attack and forcing their way deep into Danbury territory. Some exceptionally clever kicking by flanker Brian Fingleton led to Lansdowne lineout at the Danbury 10. The ensuing throw-in went directly to Kildareman Fingleton, who blew past the Danbury line, and slammed down in the in-goal. The try, in the 16th minute, widened the homeside's lead to 19-9. Lansdowne's confidence was now at its apex, and the Irish Bhoys began to smell blood. The next kickoff saw the homeside on the attack yet again. Defending from inside their own 22, Danbury stole the ball at the base of a ruck. However, the ensuing clearance kick was blocked and run down by flanker James Kennedy. Tipperaryman Kennedy snatched up the ball, and slammed down in the in-goal. Scrumhalf Smooch Delaney converted in the 19th minute, making the numbers 26-9 to the Bhoys. Danbury, perhaps overconfident at the beginning of the match, but now sensing the possibility of a loss, started to push forward in an attempt to stage a comeback. The men from Conneticut utilized multiple phases in an advanced attack mode and arrived at the Lansdowne 5 meter line. Despite some huge hits and several key tackles by the heroic Lansdowne defense, Danbury touched down under the posts in the 24th minute. The score brought the visitors to within 26-14. The next 6 minutes saw Lansdowne player-coach Gavin Butler take control of the match. Center Butler did his Jonah Lomu ball in hand imitation, and his Ronan O'Gara ball at foot mimic and advanced the Lansdowne cause down to Danbury's 22. An offsides penalty gave scrumhalf Smooch Delaney a kick at goal. Offalyman Delaney was perfect, finalizing the score at 29-14. The final minutes saw a gallant attempt by Danbury to close the gap, only to be foiled by a knock-on just in front of the in-goal. The final whistle blew with the delirious Lansdowne players and supporters ( led by superfan Irene Delaney) leaping into celebratory modeleague decider at home against the New York Americans on November 11 at 1:00 PM. . LANSDOWNE EXPRESSED SIDETRACKED by Richie Price. On Saturday,October 21st, the Lansdowne Rugby Club of New York suffered its first defeat of the fall season. On a crystal clear day with temperatures in the high 50s, the bhoys were edged by a tough Old Blue C side to the tune of 5
to 0.
A strong north south wind played havoc with each team's kicking game, thereby preventing any successful penalties or conversions. Lansdowne came out roaring in the first half, looking to score early and often. The Irish side, led by flanker Delf (the try
scoring) King, kept penetrating into Old Blue's staunch defense by utilizing multiple phases in recycling clean ball out to the backline. Constant forays into Old Blue's territory led the players and spectators alike into believing that Lansdowne were always about to strike, but the Old Blue defense held firm. In the 21st minute, a penalty at the base of a ruck gave Old Blue possession at the Lansdowne 22. Old Blue seemed poised to run the ball into the in-goal, but were stopped dead by Lansdowne's defense. The ball came out to fullback Mike Doolan, who sent a towering kick into midfield and into touch, thereby nullifying Old Blue's advance. The first half ended with Lansdowne once again on the attack, but were stopped short of the in-goal. The second half began with Old Blue beginning to assert themselves with successful multple phases. Their hard work paid off as the 8th minute saw the Old Blue inside center touching down in the corner of the in-goal off of a clean ball out of a ruck. The conversion was missed, making the score 5-0. The next 8 minutes saw the action going back and forth and possession frequently changing hands. However, in the 18th minute, a rolling maul by the powerful Lansdowne forwards traveled 20 meters towards Old Blue's in
goal. The charge, led by Manus O'Sullivan, Delf King and Brian Fingleton, seemed indefensable and gave a shot of adrenaline to the Irishmen. Second row Brian Galligan touched down in the corner of the in
goal. However, a highly dubious referee's call nullified the try and gave possession back to Old Blue. The rest of the second half was reminiscent of the first, as Lansdowne dominated possession and were furiously bent on scoring only to be denied by the Old Blue defense. The final whistle blew with Old Blue coming away with a hard fought 5-0 victory.
Man of the Match for the second week in a row was flanker Delf King, who was everywhere on the pitch both offensively and defensively. Special mention goes to Manus O'Sullivan, Gavin Butler, Brian Fingleton, Mark Maher, Mike Doolan, Smooch Delaney, Luis Berroteran, Johnny Coghlan and James Kennedy. THE LANSDOWNE RUGBY EXPRESS KEEPS ROLLING by Richie Price.
On Saturday, October 14th, the Lansdowne RFC of New York continued its unbeaten ways by methodically taking apart the Gotham Knights Rugby Club to the tune of 29-15.
The match, which was Lansdowne's first home contest of the fall campaign, was a nip and tuck affair in the first half, but was dominated by the home side in the second. The weather conditions were perfect for rugby, as the sun was brilliant, and the temperature at kickoff was 57 degrees. The first few minutes saw Lansdowne come out with an attacking mindset as the Irish boys were intent on scoring early. Multiple phases, led by flanker Delf King, led to huge territorial gains by the homeside. The hard work paid off handsomely as a rolling maul from 20 meters out culminated in Delf King slamming the ball down in the corner of the ingoal at the 3rd minute mark. The conversion into the wind was missed, giving Lansdowne a 5-0 lead.
Gotham, however, was unimpressed, and stole the ball in a ruck at Lansdowne's 30 meter line. The ball came out cleanly to Gotham's backline, who showed some nifty creativity in the open field. The Knight's outside center was able to scamper untouched into the in-goal, thereby tying the score in the 6th minute. For the next 8 minutes, the action went back and forth as each team tried to find a weakness in the opposition's defense. The Lansdowne forwards, led by Manus O'Sullivan, Brian Fingleton and Delf King, made some huge territorial gains, pushing Gotham's defense farther back on their heels. The ball landed safely into the sure hands of scrumhalf Smooch Delaney, who sent a chip passed the Knight's fullback. Offalyman Delaney came up with the ball and touched down in the in-goal, giving Lansdowne a 10-5 advantage in the 16th minute. It seemed as though Lansdowne was ready to strike again, as center Gavin Butler began to assert himself with ball in hand and treat the Knights' defenders as bowling pins. However, a turnover in a ruck led to a Gotham counterattack. The Knights took advantage as a hands-in-the-ruck gave the visitors a penalty kick. The shot at goal was successful, making the score 10-8 for Lansdowne in the 21st minute. Gotham continued on the attack and took the lead in the 27th minute. Despite heroic efforts by the Lansdowne defense inside the home side's 5 meter line, the Knights were able to touch down under the posts. The conversion was successful, making the numbers 15-10.
In the 37th minute, a player from each side was sinbinned due to a physical confrontation out of sight of the referee. Being down to 14 men seemed to galvanize the men from Ireland as a rolling maul from 30 meters out culminated in a try by fullback Mike Doolin in injury time. The halftime whistle blew with the score at 15 apiece.
The first 15 minutes of the second half saw no score, although Lansdowne were asserting themselves physically and maintaining the lion's share of possession and territory. In the 16th minute, center Gavin Butler and flanker Delf King led the charge in convincing fashion, by making big gains through punishing running. The ball came out to Smooch Delaney, who once again worked his magic and touched down in the in-goal, thereby regaining the lead to Lansdowne. Offalyman Delaney split the posts, making the numbers 22-15.
Excellent work by the Lansdowne forwards, and some clever kicking by flanker Brian Fingleton, kept Gotham pinned back in their own territory as Lansdowne looked to score again. The Knights began to counterattack off of a lineout and managed to return to Lansdowne's half of the pitch. However, the Irish lads weren't finished yet and stole a ball in a ruck. Kildareman Brian Fingleton launched a 20 meter Garryowen, which landed in the capable hands of winger James Stones. Westmeathman Stones blew past 2 Gotham defenders and punished 2 would-be tacklers, thereby gliding untouched into the in-goal from 30 meters out. The conversion by Corkman Johnny Coughlin was perfect, finalizing the score at 29-15.
Man of the Match was flanker Delf King, whose nose for the ingoal and punishing running were sublime. Special mention goes to Smooch Delaney, Mike Doolin, Gavin Butler, Manus O'Sullivan, Brian Fingleton, Mark Maher and newcomer Jack Dooley.
Next up for Lansdowne is a home match on Saturday, October 21st at 1:00 in Van Cortlandt Park against Old Blue C. Lansdowne practices are held every Tuesday and Thursday in the aforementioned Van Cortlandt Park at 243rd Street and Broadway at 7:00 PM.

Lansdowne Rugby Climbs to 4-0.
by Richie Price.
On Saturday October 7, the Lansdowne RFC of NYC continued its unbeaten season by downing a spirited Suffolk Bullmoose Rugby
Club by the score of 15-0. Lansdowne won yet another away encounter, meaning the Irish side will be playing the
rest of the season in the friendly confines of home. The visitors began the match by putting considerable pressure on
the Suffolk defense. Effective rucking by the powerful Lansdowne forwards, as well as excellent passing and open field
running by the backs led to a successful penalty kick in the 15th minute by the ever-impressive scrumhalf Smooch Delaney.
Continued Lansdowne pressure led to numerous excursions into Suffolk's backline. The attack finally paid off late
in the first half as multiple Lansdowne phases and some creative playmaking by the Irish backline resulted in center Johnny
Coughlin slamming the ball down in the in-goal. The halftime score was Lansdowne 8, Suffolk 0. The second half
began as the first ended with Lansdowne impressive in recycling clean ball to the Irish backs. Fullback Mike Doolin
took full advantage by taking the ball out wide and touching down in the in-goal. Scrumhalf Smooch Delaney split the
posts in the conversion, finalizing the score at 15-0. Man of the Match was irrepressible prop Mark Maher, whose scrummaging
was outstanding, and whose tackling/defense were downright inspirational. Special mention goes to Brian Gallagher, Gavin

On Saturday, September 30th, the Lansdowne RFC of NYC continued its winning ways
by downing the NYPD by the score of 22
- 0.
In the first half, the Irish side came out swinging by recycling clean ball due to the efforts of the powerhouse front row of props Mark Maher, Vili Bakasikivala, and hooker Luis
Berroteran, who was later replaced by Horatio Cazarian because of a leg injury. The Lansdowne
backs spun the ball out wide and were able to draw the NYPD backline offside in the 20th minute.
Scrumhalf Smooch Delaney made good on a 35 meter penalty, giving the Bhoys a 3
- 0 lead.
In the 30th minute, #8 Manus O'Sullivan beautifully offloaded to scrumhalf Delaney as the
Offallyman took the ball from 30 meters out and slammed it home near the right post.
The try gave Lansdowne a 8
-0 lead going into the half. The second stanza began with Lansdowne
continuing pressure
on the opposition by utilizing quick ball possession from the kick-off. Through good ball control at the set pieces and at the base of the rucks,
the Lansdowne forwards provided more scoring opportunities. In the 25th minute,
scrumhalf Smooch Delaney cleaned up a ruck and spun a long pass to center Gavin Butler.
Player-coach Butler punished 2 would be tacklers with some powerful running and touched down in the in-goal.
The conversion by Delaney gave Lansdowne a 15
- 0 advantage.
Lightning struck immediately thereafter as the PD kicked off to Lansdowne prop Vili Bakasikivala.
Vili galloped 30 meters down the pitch, offloading to center Gavin Butler, who scored yet another
try. The conversion by Smooch Delaney finalized the score at 22-0.
Man of the Match was Limerickman Manus O'Sullivan, who secured all of the Lansdowne lineouts
and managed to disrupt some by the NYPD. He displayed excellent defense as well, tackling
relentlessly and pilfering many PD possessions. Special mention goes to Brian Gallagher, Smooch Delaney, John Batista, Mike Doolan, Delf King, James Stones and the ageless Conor Waters. Lansdowne Rugby 33 Hudson Valley 32
by Richie Price.
On Saturday, September 16, the Lansdowne RFC of NYC edged a game and fit Hudson Valley side on a penalty
kick from outhalf Johnny Coughlin just seconds before the final whistle. The victory was a particularly satsfying one
for the Irish side due to the fact that not only was it in Hudson Valley's backyard, it came against the team that
eliminated Lansdowne from last season's playoffs. In the first half, Hudson Valley opened the scoring 15 minutes into
the match via a penalty kick from inside the Lansdowne 30 meter line. The visitors responded immediately by marching
the ball down the pitch off of multiple phases. Lock Brian Gallagher finished off the drive by slamming the ball
down in the far corner of the in-goal. The try was unconverted leaving the score 5-3 to Lansdowne. Hudson Valley
once again demonstrated their mettle and came back to score 2 converted tries within minutes of each other, making the numbers
17-5 to the home side. Lansdowne made good on an opportunity to get more points on the board when several indiscretions
at the bottom of ruck by Hudson Valley culminated in a successful penalty kick by Johnny Coughlin, 17-8 to the home side.
Shortly thereafter, another penalty was awarded to Lansdowne, and the ball was sent over the crossbar by Corkman Coughlin closing
the gap to 17-11 to HV. Lansdowne continued their momentum by taking the lead on a converted try when scrumhalf
Smooch Delaney quickly recycled the ball off of a ruck and spun it out to flanker Brian Fingleton inside Hudson
Valley's 40 meter line. Kildareman Fingleton touched down for the try in the far corner, which was converted by
Johnny Coughlin and made the numbers 18-17 in favor of the visitors. Once again, Hudson Valley came roaring back
and became relentless with ball in hand for the remainder of the half. However, hard tackling and furious red zone defense
by Lansdowne kept Hudson Valley out of the in-goal. But in the waning minutes, the home side regained the lead 20-18
via a penalty kick from 30 meters out. The second half saw Hudson Valley come out determined to lengthen their lead
and maintain ball possession. They scored an unconverted try which gave them a 25-18 advantage. On the ensuing
HV drive, hard tackling and a well positioned backline Lansdowne enabled the Irish side to regain possession of the ball.
In his relentless pusuit of oppossion ball carriers, #8 Manus O'Sullivan grabbed a loose ball inside Hudson Valley's
30 meter line and ran it into the far corner of the in-goal against 2 would-be tacklers, putting the score at 25-23 for the
home side. Soon after, the lead changed hands again as one-man show Johnny Coughlin scored and converted his own try
giving the visitors a 30-25 lead. Hudson Valley were in no mood to allow the guests to maintain a lead and came out
looking to defend their turf successfully. The home team scored a converted try from a lineout at the Lansdowne
10 meter which brought the score to 32-30 for the home side. Just before the ensuing kickoff, the referee announced
to both captains that there were only 2 minutes remaining in the encounter. A penalty occurred inside Hudson
Valley's 40 meter line, as a tackler did not roll away from the Lansdowne player who recovered the kickoff. With the
final seconds ticking away, the end result of this grueling encounter rested on the formidable boot of outhalf Johnny
Coughlin. Corkman Coughlin didn't disappoint by coolly slotting the penalty, thereby giving Lansdowne a dramatic
and totally deserved victory at 33-32. Man of the match is the previously mentioned Johnny Coughlin,
who had a cracker all-around game and the pressure penalty kick which won the contest. Special mention goes to
the County Offaly duo of Smooch Delaney and Mike Doolan, and player-coach Gavin Butler who created huge space and numerous
scoring opportunities. Another special mention goes to the forwards, including Brian Fingleton, Manus O'Sullivan, Delf
King, Big John Sullivan, Vili Bakasikivala, Mark Maher, Brian Gallagher and Luis Berroteran, who left everything on the pitch
and were spent by the end of the match. Next up for the 2-0 Lansdowne is an away match against the NYPD on September
30th. We would like to thank our primary sponsor "The Heritage Sports Bar" for their continued support.

LANSDOWNE RUGBY WINS OPENER by Richie Price. On Saturday, September 9, the Lansdowne RFC of New
York opened the 2006 fall season by hammering North Jersey to the tune of 31-12. The convincing win was all the more
impressive because Lansdowne was the visiting team. The home side opened scoring by creating a try off of multiple
rucks and good ball possession in the fifth minute. The conversion was unsuccessful making the score 5-0.
Lansdowne's response was to take control of the clock by recycling clean ball for the better part of 15 minutes. Try
scoring Delf King demonstrated his magic by scoring Lansdowne's first 5 pointer of the campaign. The unconverted score
lifted the numbers to 5-all, ending the first half. The second half began with North Jersey asserting themselves, and
scoring a well-deserved try in the 10th minute. The conversion was good , making the score 12-5 to the home team.
This seemed to galvanize the Irish side as Lansdowne responded furiously and took control of the match. Spectacular
open field running by the deadly halfback combo of Smooch Delaney and Johnny Coughlin, as well as superb fullback Mike Doolan
kept stretching the NoJo defense wider and wider. Monster forward support from "Big" John O'Sullivan, Brian Fingleton
and Manus O'Sullivan kept the ball in Lansdowne's hands. And forceful scrummaging from the irrepressibles, props Mark Maher,
Vili Bakasikivala, and hooker Luis Berroteran, as well as replacement hooker Horatio Cazarian, kept the NoJo forwards
back on their heels. Man of the Match was double try scorer, scrumhalf Smooch Delaney, whose creativity was sublime.
Special mention goes to try scorers Mike Doolan, and player-coach Gavin Butler, who had yet another cracker game, including
a powerful score beginning from 30 meters out. Another mention goes to prop Luis Berroteran, who was outstanding
as a newly converted hooker. Next Saturday sees Lansdowne traveling to Hudson Valley to face the team that put the Irish
side out of last spring's playoffs. We would like to thank our main sponsor "The Heritage Sports Bar" for all of
their continued support. Lansdowne practices are held every Tuesday and Thursday at 7:00 in Van Cortlandt Park at 243rd

LANSDOWNE RFC PLACES 3RD IN JO JO MOORE by Richie Price. The Lansdowne Rugby Football Club placed
3rd in this year's Jo Jo Moore Tournament by beating the Gotham Knights and New Rochelle Alumni, before succumbing to Harvey
Academy Alumni. The first match saw Lansdowne dominate the Knights in all phases of the game before coming out on top
by 46-7. Powerful forward play provided clean ball from set pieces and at the base of the rucks and mauls to scrumhalf
Smooch Delaney. Offalyman Delaney took full advantage in the 1st 10 minutes by spinning the ball out wide to his
fellow backs who used the full width of the pitch in getting the ball to newcomer Ray Maloney. Inside center Maloney
was able to slam the ball down in the corner of the in-goal for Lansdowne's 1st try; Lansdowne 5, Knights 0. Lansdowne's
2nd try came just a few moments later as player/coach Gavin Butler worked his magic and touched down in the same corner; Lansdowne
10, Knights 0. Lansdowne's last try of the half came soon after as fullback Mike Doolan scored a lovely try giving
Lansdowne a 15-0 lead. However, the Knights weren't finished themselves, and gobbled up a loose ball at the Lansdowne
30 meter line. Crisp passing enabled the Knights to come up with a try just before the half expired; Lansdowne15,
Gotham Knights 7. The second half saw Lansdowne pick up where they left off as a 5 try barrage put the match out
of reach in favor of the Irishmen. Repeat offenders were Man of the Match Ray Maloney, Gavin Butler and Mike Doolan.
Other try scorers were Smooch Delaney and newcomer John Ferguson, who gets an honorable mention. Halfback Delaney converted
3 of the tries. Lansdowne won their second match of the day by beating New Rochelle Alumni to the tune of 15-5.
The Irish Side dominated all of the set pieces and successfully advanced into their opponents half through use
of multiple phases, but could not capitalize on ball possession. Handling errors were made by both team, coupled with
poor game management from the referee, made for a non-fluid match. In the first half, yet another superb effort from
Gavin Butler gave him his 3rd try of the day. Lansdowne's 2nd try was scored by Westmeath's own James Stones who only
began playing rugby in 2005. Scumhalf Smooch Delaney converted a try and kicked a 30 meter penalty, thereby ending Lansdowne
scoring. New Rochelle managed an unconverted 2nd half try, ending the scoring at 15-5. Men of the Match were
James Stones and Delf King. The semi-final saw an undermanned Lansdowne team fall to Harvey Academy Alumni by the
score of 19-0. Harvey Academy, a team made up of mainly NYCONN and Hudson Valley RFC players, were able to take advantage
of Lansdowne's numerous handling errors to jump out to what became an insurmountable lead. Stifling defense on
the part of the Academy prevented the exhausted Irish side from mounting any sustained attacks. The final score was Harvey
Academy Alumni 19, Lansdowne 0. Men of the Match were player/coach Gavin Butler, flanker Brian Fingleton, outhalf Aiden
Whelan and scrumhalf Smooch Delaney. Special mention goes to the front row of Luis Berroteran, Horatio Cazarian and
Mark Maher, who played all 3 matches without any substitutions. Summer practices are held every Wednesday at 7:00 PM in
Van Cortlandt Park on 243 Street and Broadway. Lansdowne is participating in various 7's, 10's and 15's tournaments
throughout the summer. Interested players shoul contact the website: www.lansdownerfc.com or e-mail: lansdowne@hotmail.com or telephone: 1(914) 584-4541, or just come on down.
LANSDOWNE RFC WINS LI TOURNAMENT, OPEN DIVISION
By Richie Price.
On Saturday May 13, Lansdowne Rugby Club won the Open Division of the annual Long Island Tournament by beating
Molloy College, Princeton Athletic, North Jersey RFC, and then taking out Columbia University Medical School in the final.
The Lansdowne Club's dominance was so convincing that the Irish side won the tournament by a combined score of 123-20.
Behind player/coach Gavin Butler's brilliant leadership and play, the Lansdowne backs and forwards put on a dazzling display
that cannot be described as anything less than brilliant. In the first match, Lansdowne hammered Molloy College by 37-0.
The Lansdowne forwards, particularly Brian Fingleton and Manus O'Sullivan, were outstanding in recycling clean ball, which
enabled scrumhalf Smooch Delaney and outhalf Johnny Coughlin to create their own particular brand of magic in attack.
The devastating halfback duo continuously infiltrated the Molloy College backline defence and utilized the magnificent skills
of Newport RFC (Limerick) teammates Aiden Whelan and Ollie O'Brien in making huge territorial gains. The well-rounded
Lansdowne attack led to a try each by hooker Horatio Cazarian, Ollie O'Brien, and Man of the Match fullback Mike Doolan.
Smooch Delaney chipped in with several successful penalty kicks. The second Lansdowne match was their closest of the
tournament as they came out on top against a game Princeton side to the tune of 23-13. Each team began slugging away,
with strong attempts to maintain possession through multiply phases. The powerful Lansdowne front row of hooker
Horatio Cazarian, and props Vili Bakasikivala and Luis Barroteran were able to contain their counterparts through commited
scrummaging. This led to continual penetration into Princeton's 10 meter line which allowed Gavin Butler and Man of
the Match Manus O'Sullivan to score a try apiece. Smooch Delaney converted both tries, as well as kicking 3 successful
penalties. The third Lansdowne match of the day saw the Boys pound North Jersey RFC by the score of 26-7. Superb
tactical kicking by Limerickman Aiden Whelan and the Offaly duo of of Mike Doolan and Smooch Delaney complimented powerful
forward play to perfection as the trio of Manus O'Sullivan, Brian Fingleton and Horatio Cazarian were nearly flawless
in their lineouts. The old equation of great kicking + clean lineouts = possession domination proved to be the rule
of the day as Lansdowne were able spin the ball off out and make huge territorial gains. Try scorers were Man of
the Match Gavin Butler, Aiden Whelan, Ollie O'Brien, and the man who always seems to find the in-goal, Delf King. Smooch
Delaney converted two penalties. The final pitted Lansdowne against the far larger and younger Columbia Medical School.
However, power and experience proved to be too much for the doctors as Lansdowne won the tournament by the score of 37-0.
Prop Vili Bakasikivala was an unstoppable force as he pumped his ageless legs and made substantial gains while making
the ball available to his teammates at all times. Superb communication between forwards and backs led to ball being
spun out wide with substantial running room. Man of the Match Smooch Delaney led the way with two tries as well as excellent
leadership and creativity from the halfback position. He also converted two tries and kicked a penalty. Other
try scorers were relentless Gavin Butler, fullback Mike Doolan, and two tries from newcomer Patrick Mangan. Man of the
Tournament was the incomparable Manus O'Sullivan, whose all-around game and tenacity were inspirational. After being runners-up
in last year's tourney, this year's trophy lifting by the Boys was greatly savored as the ensuing celebration ran late into
the wee hours. Congratulations are in order!! Lansdowne practices are held every Tuesday and Thursday at
7:00 PM in Van Cortlandt Park at 243rd Street and Broadway. Interested players of any age and experience should just

LANSDOWNE RFC COMES UP SHORT
by Richie Price.
On Saturday, April 29th, despite a furious 2nd half comeback, the Lansdowne Rugby Club were edged by the
Village Lions to the tune of 12-10 at the Lions' home field on Randall's Island. In a physical affair reminiscent of
last month's Munster victory over Perpignan, big hits and tight defense were the order of the day as the 2 sides slugged it
out over the course of 80 minutes. Neither team gained a big territorial advantage until the 20th minute, when the referee
claimed obstruction against Lansdowne, giving the Lions superb field position. As the hometeam was attacking at the
5 meter line, the visitors managed to shove the Lions' ballcarrier into touch, making it Lansdowne ball. However, the
hosts struck first by stealing the ensuing Lansdowne lineout and crossing into the in-goal, making it 5-0. The conversion
kick went wide right. Some superb territorial kicking by scrumhalf Smooch Delaney and center Aiden Whelan gave Lansdowne
possession inside the Lions' 10 meter line. An offsides at the base of the ruck was called, thereby giving outhalf Johnny
Coughlin a shot at goal in the 30th minute. Corkman Coughlin's penalty kick was dead on, making the score 5-3 to the
Lions. Two minutes later, the Lions threatened again as a Lansdowne penalty led to a shot at goal for the hosts. The
kick was wide right, keeping the score 5-3. The action went back and forth until injury time when, after multi-phase
ball, the Village lions were able to touch down in the in-goal, giving the hosts a comfortable lead. The conversion
was good at the end of the first half, making the score 12-3. The second half began much in the same fashion as the
first, with several thunderous tackles and smothering defense by each team. In the 14th minute, a Lions' offsides gave
Lansdowne a penalty kick. The visitors chose a kick to touch rather than a kick at goal. The decision paid off
in a spectacular fashion as winger James Stones came away from a lineout with ball in hand. Offalyman Stones offloaded
beautifully to center Aiden Whelan who demonstrated superb moves and slammed the ball down in the in-goal. The Coughlin
conversion was perfect, making the score 12-10 to the Lions. In the 36th minute, multi-phase ball gave Lansdowne
possession deep in Lions' territory. The visitors were attacking furiously, sensing a lead change, when the referee
made a highly peculiar call (ELBOWING??!!) against ballcarrier Vili Bakasikivala. Prop Bakasikivala came away from the
exchange with a look of astonishment on his face as the official awarded possession to the homeside. The final
whistle blew 4 minutes later, making the score 12-10 to the Village Lions. Man of the Match was try-scoring center Aiden
Whelan, who had a cracker all-around game. Honorable mention goes to indominable props Vili Bakasikivala and Mark Maher,
forwards Manus O'Sullivan and Brian Fingleton, center Gavin Butler and outhalf Johnny Coughlin. Special mention goes
to flanker Delf King, who upon ripping the ball from a Lions' forward during a particularly testy maul, had the temerity to
cackle loudly, "IT'S MINE NOW, HAH, HAH, HAH, HAH." Lansdowne practices are held at 7:00 PM in Van Cortlandt Park at
243rd Street and Broadway every Tuesday and Thursday . Interested players of any age and experience should come
on down or contact Lansdowne at the following: Phone hotline 1(914)584-4541, or website: www.lansdownerfc.com or E-Mail: lansdowne@hotmail.com. CORRECTION: Last week's Lansdowne opponent was Albany "B", not NYCONN "B". I apologize to everyone
involved.

LANSDOWNE RFC POUNDS Albany "B"
by Richie Price.
They say good things come to those who are patient, and this time they are right. On Saturday, April
22nd, Lansdowne Rugby Club erased the memory of 2 very close losses while hammering the Albany "B" side to the tune of 30-7.
Lansdowne, demonstrating the power and ingenuity for which the are known, simply dominated the home side on a wind-swept
pitch in Stamford, Conneticut. The match began as Albany won the first 2 scrums, giving their backs clean ball.
That changed immediately as the Lansdowne pack began to tighten up and flex their muscle. The scoring began in
the 3rd minute of the game when last week's man of the match Gavin Butler rumbled into the in-goal off of a lovely territorial
kick from the boot of Corkman Johnny Coughlin. The wind-blown conversion went wide left, 5-0 Lansdowne. The visitors
continued their try scoring ways in the 10th minute as Limerick's own Manus O'Sullivan took a quick tap penalty and slammed
into the corner of the in-goal. The successful conversion by Johnny Coughlin made it 12-0 to the visitors. The 19th
minute saw the try of the match take place as Manus O'Sullivan and Offaly's Smooch Delaney took turns offloading to each other
beginning at 30 meters out. Scrumhalf Delaney touched down next to the right post. The Coughlin conversion
was good, making it 19-0 to Lansdowne at the break. The 2nd half began where the 1st half left off as Gavin Butler scored
his 2nd try of the match off of a quick throw in at the 7th minute. The Coughlin conversion made it 26-0 to the visitors.
Ten minutes later, Albany demonstrated multi-phase ball giving them possession deep in Lansdowne territory. The effort
paid off handsomely as the hosts scored a lovely try from an offload 3 meters out. The conversion was successful making the
score 26-7. In the 28th minute, Lansdowne roared back with some quick passes leading to a beautiful territorial
kick by former Newport RFC (Limerick) player Aiden Whelan. The ball landed in the hands of former Newport teammate
Ollie O'Brien. Tipperaryman O'Brien blew past 2 defenders, gliding into the in-goal from 15 meters out. The wind-blown
conversion was unsuccessful, finalizing the score at 31-7. Men of the match were the County Offaly duo
off scrumhalf Smooch Delaney, due to his spectacular first half try, and fullback Mike Doolan, thru his superb territoral
kicking and field generalship. Honorable mention goes to center Gavin Butler (2 tries, whew!!!), #8 Manus O'Sullivan
and outhalf Johnny Coughlin. The club would like to congratulate 2nd row "Big" John O'Sullivan for his upcoming nuptials
to the lovely Brenda Casey. Way to go, guys!! Lansdowne practices are held every Tuesday and Thursday at 7:00
PM in Van Cortlandt Park on 243rd Street and Broadway. Interested players of any age and experience should come on down,
or contact Lansdowne RFC at the following: phone hotline 1(914) 584-4541, or website: www.lansdownerfc.com or e-mail: lansdowne@hotmail.com. Next up for Lansdowne is an away match with the Village Lions at 1:00 on Randall's Island on April 29th.

LANSDOWNE RUGBY CLUB FALLS IN INJURY TIME
By Richie Price.
Despite a heroic second half comeback, visiting Lansdowne RFC went down fighting to Division 2 powerhouse
Montclair to the tune of 41-34. The first 8 minutes saw frequent ball turnover without either side gaining significant
territorial advantage. However, in the 9th minute, the Montclair fullback was able to exploit an overlap in the
Lansdowne midfield and galloped 45 meters into the in-goal. The successful conversion gave the home side a 7-0
lead. The action went nip and tuck for the next 12 minutes as halfbacks "Smooch" Delaney and Johnny Coughlin put
on a territorial kicking display, to no avail. In the 21st minute, a Lansdowne offside led to a Montclair penalty
at the 10 meter line which was successfully coverted by the home side's fullback- Montclair 10, Lansdowne 0. In the
30th minute, an infringement by Montclair gave "Smooch" Delaney a chance to get Lansdowne on the scoreboard. Scrumhalf
Delaney's penalty was dead perfect- Away 3 Home 10. Two minutes later, off of a stolen lineout, Montclair touched
down in the in-goal. The conversion made it 17-3. Lansdowne barely had time to catch a breath when a wind -blown kickoff
that went directly into touch gave Montclair a scrum at the half way line. The Montclair scrumhalf took clean ball from
his own #8 and demonstrated some nifty moves, scoring yet another try. The conversion made it 24-3. More impressive
running led to a successful Montclair goal from the 10 meter line- 27-3 to the homeside. Approaching injury time saw
Lansdowne counterattack furiously, leading to a Montclair penalty. The ensuing lineout saw "Big" John Sullivan come down with
the throw which led to a driving maul from 12 meters out. Brian "Fingers" Fingleton and Manus O'Sullivan share the credit
as each man had a hand on the ball when it was touched down. The try was converted- Away 10, Home 27. However,
Montclair wasn't finished scoring yet. A Lansdowne turnover gave possession back to the home side in the visitor's
half. Montclair took advantage by pouncing on a beautiful territorial kick in the in-goal. The successful conversion
ended the first half at 34-10. As the first half was dominated by the home team's four long distance tries, the second
stanza became a showcase of Lansdowne's mettle and ingenuity. Back and forth territorial gains without scores dominated
the first 15 minutes of the second half until lightning struck in the form of flanker Delf King. The second half
replacement began Lansdowne's furious comeback by peeling off of a downed rolling maul from 5 meters out and slamming into
the in-goal. The Coughlin conversion was good- 17 visitors, 34 home team. In the 25th minute, King launched a
lovely kick from midfield which bounded into open territory 10 meters from Montclair's in-goal. The loose ball
was gobbled up by Brian "Fingers" Fingleton, who subsequently sent a clever grubber kick passed the line.
The ball was touched down by last week's Man of the Match, winger Anthony O'Brien. Halfback Johnny Coughlin's conversion
was good, lowering the lead to 24-34. In the 29th minute, Lansdowne was on fire as fullback Aiden Whelan took the ball
from an offload at midfield and dummied passed both Montclair centers. The Limerickman went half the length of the pitch,
touching down under the posts. Another Coughlin conversion had Lansdowne within 3 points. That was to change 4
minutes later as Coughlin struck again with a penalty goal, thereby tying the score. Unfortunately, the furious Lansdowne
comeback simply wasn't enough as the Montclair backs showed some inspired moves and deft passing culminating in a lovely
try as time expired. The conversion was good, ending the score at 41-34 to the home side. Man of the Match
was player/coach Gavin Butler whose powerhouse running and long no-look passes were nothing short of sublime. Honorable
mention goes to the following: indefatigable prop Vili Bakasikivala, flanker Delf King, #8 Manus O'Sullivan and halfback Johnny
Coughlin. Lansdowne practices are held at 7:00 every Tuesday and Thursday in Van Cortlandt Park on 243rd Street and
Broadway. Interested players of any age and experience should come on down or contact Lansdowne RFC at the following:

LANSDOWNE RFC BEATEN BY NORTH JERSEY RFC IN VAN CORTLANDT PARK
By Richie Price.
On Saturday, April 1st, Lansdowne Rugby Club were edged by North Jersey to the tune of 14-11 towards the guests.
The first 10 minutes of the match saw Lansdowne apply relentless pressure which culminated in 2 successful penalty kicks by
outhalf Johnny Coughlin. The next 30 minutes of the half were territorilly dominated by Lansdowne as the forwards and
backs created numerous scoring chances, but to no avail. The half-time score was 6-0 to the home team. After the
break, North Jersey came out with renewed purpose in their attack. Utilizing good ball possession and aided by several
Lansdowne penalties, the visitors were able to get the ball out wide and touch it down in the in-goal. The try
was converted. Lansdowne roared back with several scoring opportunities inside North Jersey's territory, but were stifled
by some questionable calls by the referee at the breakdowns. North Jersey regained possession and managed to march
up the field which culminated in their scoring a try off of a quick tap penalty inside the Lansdowne 10 meter line.
The try was converted, thereby ending North Jersey's scoring. The following 25 minutes saw both teams demonstrating
their winter rust by committing many handling errors which lead to numerous turnovers. In the final 5 minutes of
the match, Lansdowne began to play with a renewed purpose perhaps due to the news of Munster and Leinster winning
their respective Heineken Cup quarterfinal matches. The home team's forward pack provided clean ball to scrumhalf "Smooch"
Delaney who, in turn, spun quick ball out to Lansdowne's backline. This led to a lineout at the visitor's 5 meter
line, where hooker Horatio Cazarian fed 2nd row and former club captain "Big" John Sullivan who, in turn, handed off
to number 8 Manus O'Sullivan. Limerickman O'Sullivan drove over 2 would-be tacklers, touching down in the near corner
of the in-goal. With time expiring, outhalf Johnny Coughlin's attempt was just wide. The final score was Lansdowne
11 North Jersey 14. Man of the match was fullback Anthony O'Brien whose sure hands and strong running at the opposition
kept the ball available to his teammates. A special mention goes to 2nd row player/coach Gavin Butler who kept Lansdowne
moving forward throughout the match with his powerful open field running and leadership. Next up for the Boys is an
away encounter with Division 2 powerhouse Montclair on April 15. Lansdowne RFC practices are held every Tuesday
and Thursday at 7:00 PM under the lights in Van Cortlandt Park on 243rd Street and Broadway just across from Dr. Gilbert's.

-------------------------------------------------------
Lansdowne 'A' 11 - North Jersey 14 April 1, 2006 Referee [Rob Perle] The
thunderstorms we expected didn't come, and except for a moderately strong wind the game conditions were very good. It was
Landsdowne's first game of the season after the club was toying with the idea of folding, so it was good to see them out with
numbers and excited to play. NoJo's numbers were weak but helped by some Seton Hall players. Both captains agreed before the
game to play uncontested scrums, even though both teams appeared to have experienced front rows. The teams also agreed to
unlimited subs. Since the game was a friendly I let it go.
Landsdowne controlled the first half with superior strength
and ball retention. NoJo stayed close with plenty of tackles but they were offsides a few times in their own end. Landsdowne
#10 had a good boot to make it 0-6 at halftime, but the team was unable to convert a few potential scoring chances into tries.
In the second half Landsdowne got noticably tired. As NoJo controlled possession and the momentum completely shifted, Landsdowne
started getting chippy. I had stern warnings for #7 and #8, and tempers stayed in check for the remaining 25 min. NoJo lacked
height and lost many of their own lineouts, but superior speed, good defense and an absence of penalties in the 2nd half led
to 2 converted tries. NoJo had good rucking the second half, and Landsdowne appeared unspirited. However, Landsdowne showed
some mettle at full time with a mauled in try in the corner after several NoJo desperation penalties. (It clearly met the
standard for a penalty try, but I wanted to give them a chance to finish the play.) 14-11 final. Landsdowne captain Gavin
#5 and NoJo "Joe" inside center were the stars on the day.
The highlight of the match was undoubtedly the inspired
play of Met NY refs. NoJo's reserve fullback, Paul "Supersub" Bethe, was on hand because Old Blue neglected to inform him
that the OB-Media game he was supposed to ref was cancelled. I almost crapped myself laughing when Paul caught a pop-kick
at the 40 meter line and called for a mark. I also took pleasure nailing him for willfully smothering the ball in a tackle
near the goal line. Also on hand was the indefatigable Horatio "Bionic Knees" Cazarian, Landsdowne #2, who played hard for
80 minutes and ran after balls kicked into touch. -------------------------------------------------
Lansdowne Trump Suffolk

The Lansdowne Rugby Club upped its season record to 5-1 this last Saturday with a 65-0 victory
over Suffolk County's Bullmoose Rugby Club. One match remains in the Lansdowne's regular season, with the playoffs and
a grab at the league title laying ahead over the next few weeks.
A damp but sunny Van Cortlandt pitch welcomed the Lansdowne back for a home game as they sat
their premier front row (Bakasikivala, Cazarian, Maher) to rest up for the big weeks ahead and gamey old boys Larry Burke
and Pete Maloney held the scrums up, while a tortured Chris Bedevian was drawn from the back row to do donkey work at tight
head. But the labors of the front row were not the news in this game; rather, the Lansdowne, playing to the
wide open style of referee Alan Whelan (he of the Lions Head Pub fame), stocked the backline with loose forwards
and massed attacks on the Suffolk squad. The Lansdowne beagn with typical mauling style, and first blood was drawn
by flanker Delf King taking ball off a maulng pack. Shaggy-maned Miko Fingleton put the next try over in the same
fashion, his first of two on the day. Flyhalf Johnny Coughlin then danced through, also for his first of
two. And shoulder-driving Conor Waters, not a bad back at 37 himself, laid two down in that first half to put Lansdowne
up by the comfortable margin of 41-0. The second half went much like the first, as Bedevian somehow slipped
out to the wing position and scored one to break up the monotony of propping, and 8-man Bubbles O'Shea and
back Brian Gallagher also went over the line. Man of the Match went to the magnanimous Smooch Delaney who played a phenomenally
destructive game at scrumhalf, at one point fielding his own up and under to dish Miko Fingelon his first score, and giving
Gallagher his try off a fine weakside run.
The Lansdowne will conduct training sessions this week on Tuesday and Thursday nights at
6:15 in Van Cortlandt Park at 243d and Broadway. Interested players can just show up, or call 914-584-4541 or e-mail

is Saturday away against the Hudson Valley Rugby Club, in which the two teams will vie for second place and home field advantage
in the playoffs. There will be league matches every Saturday through November 3.

The Lansdowne Rugby Club upped their record to 4-1 this season with a 41-0 victory over the New
York Police Department Rugby Club this past Saturday in the Bronx.
On a day that would have made Noah quail, Lansdowne played the NYPD on an astroturf pitch on Fordham
University campus. The slick conditions, howling wind and pelting rain made for some humorous miscues as the ball behaved
like a greased pig and the two rugby clubs stumbled like drunken frat boys trying to pen it. The conditions meant
that Lansdowne got off to a slow start, making ground on penalty kicks to touch and then mauling the willful ball up the sidelines.
The team's first two tries came on mauls into the corners, and their third try off a brilliant run by Miko Fingleton.
At the half, Lansdowne were up 17-0 and switching sides to face into a severe wind. The NYPD started the second half
hard and, with their forwards running ball off rucks, made several threats at the tryline. The Lansdowne defense held
firm, however, limiting the gains and counting on the odds and miserable conditions for changes of possession which inevitably
came. After the coppers' onslaught, the Lansdowne backline seemed to light up and began turning in some fine
runs. The Lansdowne pack delivered clean ball to the backs out of the scrums and line-outs, and the backline eventually
broke open the NYPD. The backs put a total of four tries over in that second half, as Anthony O'Shea and Johnny
Coughlin found their crazy legs and danced through the opposition. Notable performances were turned in by wingers
James Stones and Stephen Murphy who made every reception a hazard for the NYPD backs and effectively
harrassed them out of the game.
The Lansdowne will conduct training sessions this week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights
